Description

A quick and delicious take on the classic sloppy joe, this version is served open-faced on golden, buttery Texas toast and topped with melty cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 6 slices Texas toast (garlic or plain)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 tbsp butter (if using plain Texas toast)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare Texas toast. If plain, spread with butter and toast until golden. If garlic, bake per package instructions.
  2. In a skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add onion, green pepper, and garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  5. Spoon meat mixture over each toast slice. Top with shredded cheese.
  6. Broil for 1–2 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Use garlic buttered toast for extra flavor.
  • Customize with jalapeños or swap in ground turkey.
  • Store meat mixture separately for best leftovers.
  • Don’t overload the toast to prevent sogginess.
